What is Period acne?

Period acne is a that occurs in sync with your menstrual cycle

Period acne is a type of acne that occurs in sync with your menstrual cycle. If you always notice either an increase in acne during menstruation or if acne suddenly pops up around your menstruation and you notice this pattern at least two continuous cycles then you are probably suffering from Period acne.

Why does acne occur during the Period?

why does period Ance occurs ?

You can put the entire blame on your fluctuating hormones during periods for your Period Acne. Before the onset of periods, the level of two hormones - estrogen and progestogen decreases while the level of testosterone remains constant throughout the periods. Also during the midcycle, there will be a rise in progesterone.

These fluctuating levels of hormones cause increased production of sebum in the sebaceous glands. Sebum is an oily substance that is produced by the sebaceous glands. The overproduction of sebum can lead to the clogging or blocking of pores and this leads to acne. Another reason for increased acne during periods is that hormonal fluctuation can increase inflammation and lead to increased bacteria that cause acne.

All of these factors put together leads you to experience period acne. Not only that even PMS is related to these fluctuating hormones.

Where does Period acne occur ?

Usually, the acne that occurs because of your menstrual cycle is located in the lower half of your face. They may be irritating and painful acne that is often seen in the chin, jawlines, and also in cheeks. Usually, this acne looks red and inflamed. No matter how tempting it might be, remember not to pop this acne.

Period acne can be painful. To get rid of the pain and get some relief you can try to do a warm or cold compress. A warm compress eases the pain and also helps to remove the pus.
